My introduction to Kohlrabi
I never knew what kohlrabi was. I had never heard of the vegetable but decided I wanted to grow it. I stumbled across this plant at Maas Nursery in Seabrook around 13 years ago while trying to find what to plant during the winter. I had removed my fall tomatoes and wanted something to take its place but had already planted enough of every other crop. So as I walked through the store, I stumbled across the plant tag that read “kohlrabi.”
There were employees close to me at the time, and rather than ask someone and risk acting like I didn’t know what it was, I just purchased them. They came in 6 packs, and I probably bought 4 or 5 of the six-packs. When I was checking out, I remember the cashier telling me, How much she adored kohlrabi and that I must have a big garden. Then she said you must love this crop, huh” I laughed and said it was one of my favorites, knowing I had never tasted it before.
I didn’t even research the crop until well after my first time growing it, I just went home and planted according to the spacing guide on the plant tag. Weeks later, I had all of these Alien shaped orbs growing in my garden.
After harvesting, I began to think well; I guess it is time to figure out what to do with this. I made a slaw with apples and cabbage. I still remember it today.
I'm glad I went to the nursery that day, and I'm pleased I bought the crop. I was introduced to one of my favorite vegetables this way. Every year I grow it from fall to early spring.
